Here is a set of environment concepts I put together *awhile ago* for the “F.E.A.R.” expansion pack, entitled "Extraction Point." These studies depict early renditions of several key areas of the game.

Anyways, I've been waiting and waiting and waiting to be able to show these, SO … now that the game has been released, enjoy!

This was one of those pieces that ended up being COMPLETELY different from what I had started with. I sat down to do a simple character piece, and ended up with a fairly dramatic, evil ravaged war-torn painting. Hahah…In any case, I went back and forth several times, trying my hardest to decide which final direction to take it in – When the painting was complete, I had a fairly colorful piece, but then I did some manipulation and ended up with another version, much darker and higher contrast (the one pictured here). Looking at it now, I think it works pretty well as a dramatic scene. Hopefully I can find some time to explore the character further, perhaps inserting him into the ravaged landscape behind him.

So…I decided to redesign a few old-school “Masters of the Universe” characters, and see what I could come up with as far as updated, more serious designs…Possibly something more film oriented. It is my FIRM belief that if you DID produce this kind of movie (the 80’s version notwithstanding), it could definitely work if you could somehow do away with the over-abundance of cartoony CHEESE. You can make the characters and story believable and real while still keeping true to the essence of the original property. Though I will say...any character that wears a rotating eye helmet takes somewhat of a stretch of the imagination to be believable. ;-) The key is to keep the "visual fiction" consistent within the characters and world, so that it doesn't appear out of the ordinary.

Serenity

It’s funny, because this piece originally started off as one of those quick, “during lunch” environment sketches. However, after developing it enough, I realized the possibility of turning it into a complete finished work. Originally I wanted to create a daytime scene, but after several tweaks and color corrections, I decided to go with something a little…later in the day. It seems to make the piece a bit more moody than it originally was, and, for those of you who might be familiar with my work, you know just how big of a fan I am of “moody.” ;-) In total I spent around ten hours painting this up, in Photoshop CS. Crits are welcome and wanted, as usual.

Alien Cyborg

Hey all. This is a character concept I did for an unnamed game concept I'm working on. Basically this is a robot/cyborg warrior of alien design...It will be part of a whole race of similar characters, and I'd like to hopefully get into doing vehicles and architecture for them to inhabit. Anyhow...this concept started as a pen sketch I did while bored in a meeting...I liked the direction it was going in and decided to paint it up all nice and pretty in Photoshop CS. Besides wanting to convey an interesting design, I also wanted to make it atmospheric, and give it a foreboding mood to emphasize the robot’s purpose as a cold killing machine. Let me know what you think about it…I’ll be sure to incorporate some feedback into the next piece I finish.

Lion Head Study

This particular character study originated from a short story envisioned by a friend of mine, Patrick Jensen. His tale was centered on two knights who happened to be lions and were involved in all manner of adventures together. This idea intrigued me, and so I was inspired to visualize one of these characters using more realism than exaggeration to convey the animalistic personality. As I do with many character studies, I started with a simple head shot to define personality and mood. Unfortunately, other more important projects fell onto my plate at the time, and so further studies of this character never came to pass.

Hey all...This is my most recent digital painting...It's a character named Turalyon from the Blizzard RTS game WarCraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal. Of course, being a concept artist, I had to put my own little twist on his character design, but all in all I think it turned out alright. In any case, it was done in Painter 8/9, with some image modifications in Photoshop CS. Lemme know what you think about it...if I have time in the near future, I'll try to get in and make some tweaks where neccessary.

The Ring

A memorable scene from "The Ring" served as the obvious inspiration for my first lighting assignment in the computer animation program at Ringling School of Art and Design. It turned out rather well, and though it is *sort of* an old image, I decided to open it up and do some post-editing to see where I could take it. If anything, it's become a cool mood piece. Enjoy!
